Pop up gallery has come to Tavistock

Contemporary Art Tavistock has been set up by Laura Hopes and Jules Greaves two artists living and working in the Tavistock area.  Noticing the number of empty shops in Tavistock, they realised that they had the ideal opportunity to create a exhibition space for contemporary artists. Laura says “We feel that Tavistock is the perfect setting for this type of project as it as it already supports a popular arts festival and has a thriving community of artists and makers”.

The idea of “Pop –Up” or temporary galleries is a nationwide movement by artists responding to the growing number of empty shops up and down our high streets.  The benefits of these projects is to increase footfall to surrounding businesses whilst increasing the commercial potential of the property.

Working with the goodwill of local landlords, Contemporary Art Tavistock is a project set up to convert empty retail space into dynamic temporary exhibition spaces. Jules Greaves says “We are very excited by this opportunity to open the first of what we hope to be many “Pop-Up” galleries, our aim is to create a showcase for emerging contemporary artists”

The exhibition which opens on Saturday 31st July at 10.30 am will feature work by a range of artists including painters, printmakers, photographers, film- makers, mixed media work and ceramicists.
